Being with the practice since 1989, I was actually a young man when I first arrived! I have a keen interest in education in all its forms and feel it is the path to great patient care and personal fulfilment.
However, I strongly believe that we can only do a great job for you if we have a great team behind us and on that score we feel we are getting stronger every year. I love the job and the patient contact and couldn’t see myself doing anything else - though see below! My interests outside medicine are horse racing, sport, technology, cars and the media including the arts, films, TV and music.
In addition to my role at the surgery I am also a Programme Director at the Ipswich GP Training Scheme [which means I am normally not at the practice on Tuesday afternoons], a GP Trainer, a GP Appraiser and a Medical Officer at Newmarket racecourse. |  |

Dr Dipika Thakerar (f)
MB BS(B.J. Med 1984) LRCP MRCS LMSSA Docc.Med MRCGP
After completing my GP training in Surrey, I moved to Ipswich and have been with the practice since 1992. I have seen the Practice progress from Berners Street Surgery to Barrack Lane Medical Centre.
I have an interest in all aspects of the Practice, specifically children, and contraception/maternity care, etc. I enjoy training future doctors. I also work as an Occupational Health Physician at the Ipswich Hospital and get involved with companies dealing with work related problems. |  |

Dr Anthony James Reidy (m)
BM BS(Nottingham 1977)
I graduated from Nottingham University Medical School. Worked in Devon for one year before spending six enjoyable years in the Army serving in Germany and Hong Kong. Entered NHS general practice in 1984 and worked in Ipswich Basildon and Lowestoft before joining the Barrack Lane team in 1995. I believe in traditional general practice with the emphasis on continuity of care. Interests outside medicine include football (Charlton Athletic), singing and cycling. |  |

Dr Christopher Uzokwe (m)

I grew up in Nigeria and Manchester where I still have strong family connections. Graduated from Lagos University and spent 7 yrs post graduate training in the north west region of UK before 5 yrs abroad as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. Moved to Suffolk in 2000. My surname is not really that strange in Nigeria and in Ipswich, I can boast of 5 patients who address me by my surname! Seriously I do not mind, as Christopher is almost as good!!
I really enjoy my work in Primary Care especially the variety and diversity that general practice offers. I might be tired after long hours but there is never a dull moment. Individually we are all unique and special but then so is everybody. I have a special interest in Minor Operations, Diabetes, General Medicine and sampling different cultures. I do enjoy my football, travelling, supporting Manchester United and watching my son play hockey and rugby. And of course family life! |  |

Dr Darren West (m)

I am the youngest and newest permanent addition to the doctors at Barrack Lane Medical Centre. I trained at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Medical School. After qualifying in 2001 I spent a year working in London before deciding to move to Ipswich with my wife. After training at Ipswich hospital for 2 years on the GP Training Scheme, I joined Barrack Lane for my final year’s training. I enjoyed working with the staff and patients here so much I decided to stay on permanently after completing my training in 2005.
I have not currently developed any areas of special interest. I am happy to see and offer help and advice to any patients either in person or over the telephone. |  |

Dr Rachael Morant (f)
BSc MB BS(London 1999)MRCGP DRCOG
I joined Barrack Lane Medical Centre as a salaried GP in August 2003 after completing my registrar year at the practice. Since 2005 I have only worked part-time. I qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1999 and after my house officer year moved to East Anglia. Before joining the practice I worked at Ipswich hospital in paediatrics; obstetrics and gynaecology; ENT; general medicine and psychiatry to fulfil my training requirement.
My specialist interests include gynaecology and family planning. I hold Diplomas from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Faculty of Family Planning. |  |

Dr Penny Newman (f)
MBBSMSc MFPHM MRCGP DRCOG
Dr Newman has been working as a GP in Suffolk for the past three years, having trained in London in 1985 and after working for many years in Public Health. She has a keen interest in women’s health and continues to put her public health knowledge to good use in the course of her work as a Consultant with NHS Suffolk where she is involved in the commissioning of maternity services and also those for people living with long term conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
When off duty Dr Newman enjoys films, books, eating, running and spending time with her family and friends. |
