Review of Lidocaine 5% Plasters (for Pain Relief)
GP practices across Suffolk and North East Essex are working closely with specialists at local pain clinics to review the prescribing of Lidocaine 5% plasters.
Why is this review taking place?
Lidocaine 5% plasters are recommended only for certain types of nerve pain and usually for short-term use. National guidance advises that these plasters should be used in specific circumstances where there is clear evidence of benefit.
We are therefore reviewing all patients who are currently prescribed lidocaine plasters to ensure:
-
The treatment remains appropriate and effective
-
Alternative pain management options have been considered
-
NHS resources are used responsibly and in line with national recommendations
A patient information leaflet is available which explains this in more detail.
What do I need to do?
If you are currently prescribed Lidocaine 5% plasters, you will need to:
-
Book an appointment for a medication review before your current supply runs out
-
Attend the review so we can assess whether this treatment is still the best option for you
Please note:
-
Do not wear a lidocaine plaster to your review appointment
-
Do not apply a lidocaine plaster for 24 hours before your appointment
This review must take place before further prescriptions for lidocaine plasters can be issued.
Our Commitment to You
Our aim is to ensure you continue to receive safe, effective, and high-quality care. Where appropriate, we will discuss alternative pain management options that may better support your long-term wellbeing.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the practice team who will be happy to help.
